In the opening, Dante finds himself lost in a dark wood, with the right path lost and gone. He falls asleep and awakes to discover he is at the base of a mountain. He tries to ascend, but encounters three animals barring his bath; a gay leopard, a lion and a she-wolf. Descending in fear, he encounters a stranger, Virgil, who will act as his guide to the summit of the mountain, but insists that before he can summit the mountain, he must first descend into the depths of Hell.
